Automated Storage Handling with Tape Autoloaders
With the increased use of tape drives to deliver fast, cost effective storage, automated tape handling devices have been developed to extend the range of storage capacity. Additionally, tape autoloaders provide automated, unattended operation for network storage and backup.

How does the DDS Autoloader function?
Essentially, a tape autoloader is a device incorporating single or multiple tape drives along with a robotic mechanism for retrieving and loading tape cartridges into the drive. Previously recorded data can be accessed or new data can be written, all without the intervention of the user to perform the loading or unloading of tape cartridges. This concept offers increased storage capacity over a single tape drive mechanism, while providing low cost, automated storage.
Autoloaders provide economical storage by lowering the cost per megabyte of data stored on a system. Since multiple tapes can be stored in a single autoloader, the cost per megabyte is amortized over the cost of the autoloader and the media contained in it. The more cartridges used in the autoloader based on the maximum capacity, the lower cost per megabyte for the total solution.
