Paralan SECOND GENERATION Extenders mitigate SCSI cable limitations. SCSI parallel signals are converted to serial information and transmitted through fiber optic cable, overcoming problems associated with transmitting parallel SCSI beyond a few feet.

A Paralan SCSI Bus Extender converts SCSI parallel signals to serial information and transmits them through fiber optic cables to another Extender that converts the information back to SCSI signals. The two Extenders communicate in full duplex mode and provide transparent communications for the SCSI bus.

No need to modify software or hardware! Just connect your SCSI cables and all devices on the bus will be available at full extended bus length.

An Extender can be connected anywhere on a SCSI cable, or directly to the SCSI interface.

The FX50 is the latest version in Paralan's family of SCSI Extenders. Improvements include:

  • A bus mastering technique which allows multithreaded operation and queued commands
  • 10-Megatransfers/sec synchronous throughput (specified at the full cable length, but will not increase appreciably with shorter cable lengths)
  • Active negation

Operation

The FX50 Extender implements SCSI in the 8-bit single-ended mode. HVD SCSI systems may be extended with the addition of Model SD10D Single/HVD SCSI Converters in series with the extender.

Paralan's proprietary transmission technique allows the use of all SCSI features, from the latest ANSI X3T10 protocol back to SASI communications of earlier systems.

Since SCSI is a standard ANSI specification, Paralan SCSI bus extenders work with any computer platform having a SCSI interface. No software changes or drivers are needed.

Active Negation

The FX50 utilizes active negation on the SCSI interface to assure data integrity at maximum data throughput. Active negation drives signals both low and high, rather than depending upon pullup resistors.

Exclusive Auto Sense™ for 5 V Termination Power

Auto Sense™ is a unique feature on Paralan SCSI products. The 5 V line may need to supply power to terminators on the other end of the SCSI cable. If 5 Volts is not on the line, the extender will automatically place 5 V on the bus. If the 5 V is grounded (due to inverted cable or incorrect wiring, for example) the extender will automatically shut off 5 V power to the bus, without blowing a fuse or affecting the operation of the extender. Auto Sense solves many initial SCSI installation problems.
